life is demanding. yes, i have heard about that and realized as well just like you. we spend every moment that we have to get things in-place and in-order. have you considered taking a small break this holiday season…?

We are slaves to our computers and mobile devices and love being forever accessible. even a national holiday sometimes is not enough to stop us from checking our work emails several times a day!

one more year has passed while we were busy replying those ever overflowing inbox and answering buzzing blackberry. we hardly had time to look out of the window as alerts and reminders kept popping up to keep us glued to the desk.

the world is celebrating Christmas on high note and look… New Year is already around the corner. take a break. its time to celebrate your achievements. cease and desist with the inbox refreshing for at least one day this holiday season.

okay, people, take a break. enjoy. relax and recharge yourself. i am sure you have good reasons to stay log off on your off-days. happy holidays!

you can avoid the pitfalls…

your greatest strength is my ability to learn. learn through navigating different situations that you find yourself in. learn by falling and learn by failing. you don’t have to have all the answers. and if you know where to get the right advice to keep going strong, you can avoid the pitfalls and knock others down.

The least I could do is share some powerful tips...some of the best advices that you'll ever receive. take notes and don’t forget to share your own tips as comments.

You know what real power is? Real powers when you are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing, the best it can be done. And nobody has to tell you, “You go, girl,” because you know, you’re already gone. - Oprah Winfrey

Delegate with confidence. Surround yourself with people who are wise and competent. Empower them to perform and do not become intimidated by their expertise. - Bishop T.D. Jakes

Know who you are dealing with and do not offend the wrong person. There are many different kinds of people in the world, and you can never assume that everyone will react to your strategies the same way. Choose your victims and opponents carefully.  Robert Greene

Consider making your life one long gift to others… All that lasts is what you pass on. The rest is smoke and mirrors. – Stephen King

Those three things autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and reward – are, most people will agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying. - Malcolm Gladwell

Everything you want is out there waiting for you. Everything you want also wants you back. But you have to take action to get it. - Jack Canfield

Look around. You’ll see the marketplace (every marketplace) rewards innovation: things that are fresh, stylish, remarkable, and new. - Seth Godin

There’s a redemptive power that making a choice has, rather than feeling like you are an effect to all the things that are happening around you. Make a choice. Just decide who you’re going to be, how you are going to do it. Just decide and from that point the universe will get out of your way. - Will Smith

I learned the way to get stories you actually want is to treat the reporter as your customer. You can’t control the press, and you can’t expect reporters to tell a story that obviously serves your self-interest. You need to become the expert in your field, the person who is quoted day in and day out. - Barbara Corcoran

Experience taught me a few good things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you’re generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don’t make. - Donald Trump

We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction. - Bill Gates

be a true professional...

once there was an old sailor, a mariner. he was regaling a group of people who had gathered around him down by the shipping docks. “i have been a mariner all my life,” he proclaimed. “for over 40 years I have sailed the seas and learned all there is to know about the ocean…” be_true_professional

a young man questioned the mariner by asking, “you know the ocean do you? what really lies beneath it? What is contained in the ocean’s depths?” “i don’t really know the answer to that,” said the mariner. “so you have just skimmed the surface all these years,” the young man replied as he walked off…

often as a professional, we just skim the surface of what lies before us. just going through the routine motions of our duties and being reactive, is not sufficient to truly achieve our potential. we need to delve deeper and push ourselves to more fully explore the true limits of our capabilities.

what does it truly mean to be a professional? take a moment. think!

the power of social media…

take a minute and watch. this clip takes a look at the true impact Social Media has on our businesses and our lives…

take that risk...

to laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
to weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
to reach out for another is to risk involvement.
to expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
to place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss.
to love is to risk not being loved in return.
to live is to risk dying.
to hope is to risk despair.
to try is to risk failure.
but, risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
the person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing,is nothing.
he may avoid suffering and sorrow,
but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love—live.
chained by his certitudes, he is a slave.
he has forfeited freedom.
only a person who risks is free.

risks must be taken! don't take the risk of not taking any risks...

negotiations at work...

In an office, as in a war, negotiation is won much before the first battle is ever fought. But unlike in a war, successful negotiation has both parties walking away as winners. Negotiation is the skill of reaching an agreement, be it with the boss and colleagues in office, or clients and vendors outside the organization.negotiations

Like any other skill, negotiation requires learning and practice. The key issues often boil down to reaching an agreement that is mutually beneficial and seeking a working relationship that permits the benefits to flow. This process can be made profitable and enjoyable for all concerned if some basic steps are followed.

The three cornerstones of successful negotiation are homework, homework and some more homework. The better prepared you are with factual data before heading into a negotiation, the more effective you will be. Try and prioritise the needs of both parties and you can plan towards a mutually advantageous solution. Always listen with an open mind, focus on receiving and communicating with maximum clarity, and maintain sufficient emotional distance.

While negotiating with a client/vendor, enter the discussion with a win-win mindset. Understand that both the parties need to walk away with gains. Try and be the first to make an offer. It will help anchor the client to your view and the final agreement is more likely to end closer to your proposal. Do not compromise on your ethical standards. Most clients/vendors would be happy to work where they perceive the other person to be fair. While the client has the right to ask and know before paying, both parties are entitled to take time to think through their reactions.

Below are some negotiation nuances:

  • ACBD - Always Consult Before Deciding;
  • Work on Real Benefits: Think about the real needs, priorities and interests of each person;
  • Hard on Problem, Soft on People: Solve the problem and look after the relationship. Don't let your personal feelings affect the agreement;
  • Multiple Solutions: Think out of the box. Most problems have more solutions than you can count;

At the end of the day, every interaction with a client/vendor teaches us something new that adds to our negotiation experience. It is a skill that takes years to master. Know that negotiation with clients is often focused on money.

cut that extra FAT…

do you resemble the cartoon here when you see yourself in the mirror..? Do you pause a while listening to the advantages and ease of ‘sauna belts’ and ‘easy slim tea’ TV ads that promises to burn, cut or possibly only-god-knows-how evaporate the extra fat you have accumulated? You know it's diet time when your favorite jeans becomes 'difficult-to-breathe-in' tight. you may want to read below to help yourself...

ayurveda suggests you include all tastes — sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent — in at least one meal each day, to help balance unnatural cravings. Here are 12 common foods that help you lose weight and gain health:pot_belly

turmeric: regular intake may help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, increase blood circulation and prevent blood clotting, helping to prevent heart attack.

cardamom: it is considered one of the best digestive aids and is believed to soothe the digestive system and help the body process other foods more efficiently.

chillies: chillies are said to be as foods that burn fat. Chillies contain capsaicin that helps in increasing the metabolism. Capsaicin is a thermogenic food, so it causes the body to burn calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chillies.

curry leaves: If you are overweight, incorporate eight to 10 curry leaves into your diet daily. Chop them finely and mix them into a drink, or sprinkle them over a meal.

garlic: an effective fat-burning food, garlic contains the sulphur compound allicin which has anti-bacterial effects and helps reduce cholesterol and unhealthy fats.

mustard oil: this has low saturated fat compared to other cooking oils. It has fatty acid, oleic acid, erucic acid and linoleic acid. It contains antioxidants, essential vitamins and reduces cholesterol, which is good for the heart.

cabbage: raw or cooked cabbage inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat. Hence, it is of great value in weight reduction.

moong dal: it is recommended as a food replacement in many slimming programs, as it has a very low fat content. The high fiber content yields complex carbohydrates, which aid digestion, are effective in stabilizing blood sugar and prevent its rapid rise after meal consumption.

honey: It is a home remedy for obesity. It mobilizes the extra fat deposits in the body allowing it to be utilized as energy for normal functions. One should start with about 10 grams or a tablespoon, taken with hot water early in the morning.

buttermilk: it is the somewhat sour, residual fluid that is left after butter is churned. Regular intake provides the body with all essential nutrients and does not add fats and calories to the body. It is thus helpful in weight loss.

millets: fibre-rich foods such as millets - jowar, bajra, ragi, etc - absorb cholesterol and help increase the secretion of the bile that emulsifies fats.

Cinnamon and cloves: used extensively in Indian cooking, the spices have been found to improve the function of insulin and to lower glucose, total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes.

leading a good life…

this morning’s times life (a Sunday Times of India supplement) made me pause a while and think on what does it really mean to lead a good life…? and what gives us the feel that we are successful in life…?

this is an open ended question and people of different age group will haveleading_a_good_life different answer to this question. some of us think of ‘status symbols’ to showoff how well we are doing. luxurious life, bank balance, the car parked in the basement, the investments that we have, the lush apartment, blah, blah, blah. the list is endless. teenagers lookout for latest touch/QWERTY phones, iPods, fast bikes and a girl-friend for sure! like i said, the options and answers varies.

the newspaper article talks about few things that makes you not only become a better soul but also enjoy your life to the fullest; uncluttered and full of energy!

well, they say that you see a flash back of your life in your last moments…make it worth watching!

India has the third most internet users in the world…

According to Google India, India has the third most internet users in the world, with 100 million people surfing the information highway. China reigns supreme with 300 million users, with the US falling in between with 207 million users.
Apparently, more than a third of that nice round number is made up by 40 million mobile internet users, a fact that puts India’s growth potential in perspective – seeing as that is just 8% of the total mobile phone subscriber base in the country.

Google India’s Vinay Goel commented on the trend, “Our estimate is that by 2012, the number of mobile internet users will surpass those entering the net via their laptops or desktops. The number of mobile internet surfers in India is growing rapidly. In 2007, the country had only two million such users. Now the number has gone up 20 times.”

Interestingly, Google’s Goel also pointed out that a majority of the internet users in the country searched for and downloaded music.

Stop drinking: Excessive liquor intake depresses specific functions of brain, which can lead to loss of memory. Apart from the risk of Heart and liver diseases, it can cause blurred vision and slows down your reaction time.

Look good: Reduce those extra wrinkles and sunburns from your face. Wear a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and wear dark sunglasses to prevent squinting when you are out in the sun.

Exercise more: Being overweight increases your risk to several diseases. Regular exercise can help lower your risk of stroke, high BP, diabetes and osteoporosis. It enhances your mood, increases your energy levels, bone strength and density, lowers your cholesterol and makes you feel less stressed.

Distribute load: Carrying heavy shoulder bags can lead to painful shoulders. If you have to carry heavy bags, distribute the weight equally between your left and right side by dividing it into two bags.

Eat less sugar: You don’t need to follow a sugar free diet, but try to reduce the amount of sugar you consume.

Eyes right: Reading in bad light or working in front of computers for long periods can cause eyestrain. Take brief breaks every hour and focus on distant objects for a few seconds to alter your depth of vision.

No nail biting: It is a habit that causes short and ragged nails. This can cause skin infection as well as bleeding around the edges. Try getting to the reasons why you started biting your nails.

Be happy: Women and girls experience depression at twice the rate of men. This destroys self-esteem and confidence. Depression tends to feed on itself, so being moderately depressed and inactive may lead to a severe form of depression.

Eat seasonal fruits: Fruits and vegetables are low in fat and rich in essential vitamins and minerals, fibers (to reduce the risk of blood clots), potassium (to control blood pressure), carbohydrates and phytochemicals.

Healthy food: Eating fatty foods especially saturated fats which are found in animal products such as red meat, cheese and dairy products, can push up your cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart diseases. Avoid foods high in fat such as potato chips and fries, use very little butter, oil, ghee and cheese. Remove visible fat from meat. Steam or grill your food instead of frying it.

Gold, silver at all-time high…

Gold and silver in the national capital on Tuesday rose to an all-time high of Rs 21,050 per ten grams and Rs 45,500 per kg, driven by firm global trend, brisk buying for the ongoing marriage season and rising demand from industrial units.

Trading activity gathered momentum after gold in global markets, which normally set a price trend at the domestic front, rose to a record-high of $1,428.70 an ounce. Silver, too, was at 30-year high of $30.32 an ounce.

Market sentiment was upbeat on retailers and jewelers buying to accommodate the current marriage season demand.

Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity gained by Rs 50 each to Rs 21,050 and Rs 20,930 per ten grams, respectively. Sovereign followed suit and went up Rs 50 to record Rs 16,800 per piece of eight grams.

Indians No. 2 in emigrating, top in sending money home…

India continued to be the largest recipient of remittances in 2010, with the figure rising from $49.6 billion in 2009 to $55 billion. It was also the country with the second largest number of emigrants (those migrating abroad) after Mexico, according to the World Bank's just-released Migration and Remittances Factbook 2011.

Interestingly, even as 11.4 million people from India went abroad, 5.4 million came into the country, making India No. 10 in the list of nations attracting the most immigrants -- and No. 2 in Asia, behind only Saudi Arabia.

India and China, which received $51 billion in remittances, account for almost a quarter of the worldwide remittance flows of $440 billion in 2010, the report estimated. High-income OECD countries account for just $107 billion of the global remittance flow.

Not surprisingly, it is the developing countries that receive the bulk -- $325 billion, an increase of 6% from 2009. Middle-income countries including China, Russia, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey receive the lion's share of over $301 billion, while low-income countries including Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Nepal, Uganda and Cambodia receive just $24 billion. Bangladesh alone accounts for over $11 billion.

The US remains the top migrant destination country in the world, with 42.8 million migrants in 2010 compared to 34.8 million in 2000, according to the World Bank report. However, just over 2.2 million Americans live outside the US, less than 1% of the country's population. Besides the US, other top destination countries are Russia, Germany and Saudi Arabia in that order.
